Indian Medical Association is the largest voluntary professional organization in the whole world.It is the only representative national voluntary organization of Doctors of modern scientific system of medicine, which lookafter the interest of Doctors as well as the well being of community at large. It has got 325000 members and more than 1700 local branches in 28 states and 4 union territories. In the fifth all India conference of modern medicine doctors (Bombay )in 28th December 1928, All India Medical Association was formed . Dr.G.V.Deshmukh was the President.In 1930 it was renamed as Indian Medical Association. IMA was the founder member of the World medical association which was formed in 1946
IMA Vatakara was formed in 28th March 1971 with 22 members. Dr.P.P.Padmanabhan was the first President and the secretary was Dr.K.K. Muhammed.It covers area from Payyoli to Mahe and at present it has about 300 members .With many best branch award to its credit,It is one of the most vibrant branch of IMA Kerala state.IMA Vatakara actively and positively take part in the health issues of the society.It is also active in social and cultural field of Vatakara with active members in visual media,press and prominent periodicals.It is one of the few branches in Kerala IMA with its own air conditionined hall,office and only medium branch(150 members) to hoist State conference.It strives to serve the members,serve the society and to promote medical education among both.
IMA Kerala state branch was formed on 20th Octobet 1957 with its headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram.Dr.S.S.Rao (Cochin)was the first President and Dr.B.M.Ambadi was the secretary.It has got 108 local branches and about 32500 members.It has a Woman's doctors wing,cultural wing and a sports wing also. IMA Kerala is helping it's members with various schemes like social security schemes , Professional protection scheme,health scheme,Pension scheme, Professional disability protection scheme ,PEPS scheme and mutual benefit scheme.It publishes a journal (Kerala medical nournal) and IMA news for the members and a monthly(Nammude aarogyam-നമ്മുടെ ആരോഗ്യം) for the public.It has got following committees for the service of society.
Image is the ima scheme for the scientific management of the hazardous biomedical waste from the whole state of kerala without any goverment aid.The biomedical waste (bmw)is collected from about 14000 private hospitals (and private non healthcare institutes),1200 government hospitals ,transported and scientifically treated as per biomedical wastemanagement rules of kerala government.Plant is situated in a 23 acres land at kanjikode,palakkad and it has got buildings witha total plinth area of more than 100,000sq.Ft ,2000 sq ft vehicle washing area and capacity to treat more than 50 metric tonnes of waste per day.There is a huge green belt surrounding the plant.Image is run by 540 workers and uses 50 ''gps,'' installed covered container trucks.Image also provides ''kaumarasree'' project for disposal sanitary napkins from schools and for the scientific disposal of discarded medicines from pharmaceutical companies.
Image is planning to start academic courses on bwm and to build more plants to cater bwm from appartments( napkin of elderly bed ridden etc) and homes.It also plans to decentralize System, foreseeing increased demand or a natural calamity.It has been running smoothly for the last 17 years.
