I joined Indian Medical Association in 1978. While working at PHC Thiruvalloor in Kerala Health service, I got transferred to Badagara (now Vatakara) in 1992. I was the president of IMA, Vatakara for 4 terms. During 1994 – 95 North zone conference of IMA KSB was conducted at Sand banks; and during 2004 another North zone conference was held at Krishna Kripa auditorium. In 2009 IMA Badagara (Vatakara) branch hosted a State Conference, Kadathanad IMA Con, under the leadership of Dr. C. Vijayaragahvan and I was the Organizing Secretary which proved to be a rich experience. In 1993 IMA Badagara (now Vatakara) branch, considering the rise in suicide among public, gave shape to a free and voluntary service “Santhwanam” registered as a trust was well appreciated by public and was quoted by many as an example of public commitment of doctors to the society which had an unfortunate end due to technical reasons. We also had started a society called “Vatakara Spastic Society” services which was later taken over by Thanal Vatakara and it has expanded to the shape ofm an international institute for all disabilities in children. IMA Badagara (Vatakara) branch was represented by myself, Dr. K.M. Subash and Dr. Thomas Godric at Dilli Challo national agitation against Violence against Doctors on 6th June 2017 organised by National IMA where more than 25 thousand doctors staged the protest
By early 2000 Emergency Department (ED) was developed as a subspecialty of Medical profession in India. By 2007 ED was born as a subspecialty in Kerala that too first in Kozhikode District.
ED was the first station to deal with any acute emergency where all doctors and paramedical are trained in management of acute emergencies. Survival rate in Ac. Myocardial Infarction improved very much and AHA (American Heart Association) after long and wide discussions among world famous cardiologists formulated special training for public to initiate pre-hospital care and medical profession for proper and prompt medical care to save the patient as a team. In due course it was noticed that survival rate improved very much by bystander CPR (an Integral part of BLS) in developed counties and developing counties. BLS (Basic Life Support) training to public and BLS + ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) training was for medical and paramedical staff showed very promising results in survival rate in all emergencies. These trainings could prevent further morbidities in accident cases especially in road traffic accidents.
Subsequently modules of these trainings were updated every five years at global level. ED has definite documented protocols for each and all medical emergencies which is followed all over the world. In 2013 there was an International Conference in Emergency Medicine at AIIMS, New Delhi where we were lucky enough to participate - only 5 doctors from Kerala including four from Kozhikode District. Here in Vatakara I could personally conduct more than 300 BLS training to public including police officers, Fire and rescue staff, staff of Kannur Air port, NSS students and SPC cadets of various schools in and around Vatakara, in addition to doctors and hospital staff. Training in ACLS is an added experience in conducting various similar trainings. 28, 534 plus two and plus one students were trained in “Hands on CPR” for four hours on 16th November 2019 at the CIAL convention centre, Ernakulum which was a Guinness Record event organized by ANGELS and IMA Cochin branch where Vatakara was represented by me. nNovel ideal and programs conducted by IMA Vatakara branch is a role model for other branches and specially appreciated by all state leaders. Young blood coming to leadership in Vatakara branch shows the difference and diversities of programs by many years. The united spirit and innovative programmes hosted by the members of IMA Vatakara is well-appreciated by all state leaders.
